Support Worker Tips for Families
Simple steps to help supports feel calm, predictable and consistent.
1) Share routines (simple, not perfect)
Write down the basics: preferred wake/sleep times, meal preferences, mobility needs, and what helps when the participant feels overwhelmed.
2) Agree on communication
- Preferred language and communication style
- Who to update (family/coordinator) and how often
- What to do if something changes during a shift
3) Use short handover notes
Even a few lines helps: what went well, what was difficult, and anything to watch for next time. This improves consistency across workers.
4) Keep changes gentle
Where possible, introduce changes slowly and explain them early. Consistency reduces stress for many participants.
